Feira dos Santos 2014 – Os bois, Reis da Feira

O concurso nacional pecuário dos bois tive lugar como todos os anos durante os Santos no Forte de São Neutel no dia 31 de Outubro. Os bois de raças Barrosã, Maronesa e Mirandesa foram premiados sexta feira de manhã no Forte que estava cheia de gente. Algums bois eram um bocado nervosos e até dois bois escaparam-se dos seus criadores para dar uma voltinha do outro lado do Forte.

Mas o que será a Feira dos Santos sem as populares chegas de bois. Esta antiga tradição das terras do Barroso continua de ser uma importante attração para os flavienses, embora o bois barrosão tem a sua origem na região de Montalegre e no Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês.

Não há muito tempo, cada “chega”, era um dia de festa para a aldeia vencedora, mas de tristeza, para os habitantes que perdiam. Mas é sempre um dia de celebrações e de reunião para o povo. “O boi do povo” tal como se chamava, era um bem comunal, considerado o supremo bem da communidade e justificava todos os cuidados. Alimentava-se normalmente nas lamas (pastos) e pernoitava numa casa (corte), que faziam parte da comunidade. Os bois eram assim preparados por toda a aldeia até “as chegas”, uma luta entre os animais que visa distinguir o campeão.

De estatura mediana e com mais de quatrocentos quilos, o boi barrosão apresenta notáveis características de resistência e grande adaptabilidade ao trabalho, que o torna muito estimado nas terras montanhosas. Quando o animal chegava à idade adulta (cinco ou seis anos) tornava-se o orgulho da aldeia, sendo por isso, motivo de discussões entre os habitantes de povoações vizinhas, com cada um a defender a maior pujança do seu animal.

O criador leva o seu boi para o terreiro e o chega com outro de idêntica compleição física e depois venham as aclamações do público e se fazem apostas a saber qual deles vai ser o campeão. No meio da exaltação e entusiasmo do público, os dois bois enfrentem-se finalmente com firmeza e denodada bravura até que um deles desiste e afasta-se dando-se por vencido.

Que seja Barrosã, Maronesa o Mirandesa, o boi é o rei da Feira dos Santos. E “as chegas” no Forte de São Neutel tem sempre boa audiência. Cada ano, os flavienses que venham de várias aldeias, tenham orgulho de mostrar os seus bois, tão estimados depois de tantos anos de criação e cuidados.

All Saints Festival 2014 – The Ox, King of the Day

The national competition of oxes took place like every year during the “Feira dos Santos” in the Forte of Sao Neutel on the 31st of October. The oxes (Barrosã, Maronesa e Mirandesa) were awarded last Friday morning in the Forte which was full of people. A couple of oxes were a bit nervous and two of them even managed to escape from their breeders to have a little walk on the other side of the Forte.

We can’t imagine the “Feira dos Santos” (All Saints Festival) without the traditional ox fighting. In fact, this old tradition from the Barroso region, more specifically from Montalegre, is still a major attraction today for people in Northern Portugal.

Not so long ago, every ox fighting was a day of celebrations, a day of happiness for the winning village and deception for the people whose ox lost the fight. But anyway it was always time for celebrations and gathering for the people. “The people’s ox” that’s how we called the animal who belonged to all the community and justified all the cares and attention. The ox would eat in a community grazing land and would sleep in a community house. They were getting prepared by all the inhabitants in the village until the day of the “chega”, a fight that involves two oxes and rewards the champion.

The oxes are of medium height and weigh more than 400 kilos. They show notable features of resistence and substantial adaptability to the labor, which make of them much-estimated animals in the mountainous lands. When the animal reaches adulthood (5 or 6 year-old), it becomes the pride of the village, being the object of discussions and bets.

The breeder brings the ox in the ground and provokes the fight with the other ox, of the similar weight and height. There comes the enthusiastic audience who make bets to guess which one will win. Along with the cheers of the public, the two oxes fight head-to-head or rather horn-to-horn until one gives up and is declared defeated.

Whatever their breed (Barrosã, Maronesa or Mirandesa), the oxes are the kings of the Festival. In the São Neutel, the ox fighting Fortress has always a good public. Every year, during the festivities, people from Chaves and the villages around are proud to show their animals, which they have raised and taken care of for this specific event.
